I Had To Get An FCC License For This...
I just found a Wikipedia entry for KCPR, the college radio station I worked at while attending Cal Poly. I live in Washington DC now and it's a joy that I have such a short commute because local radio stations are really bland here. It seems that outside of all-talk style radio, nobody on the air is allowed to have an authentic personality anymore. It was completely different working on-air at KCPR where it seemed to me that I lived and died - every shift- largely by the seat of my pants. It was a lot of fun and one of those experiences I'm just truly glad I did. I still recall clearly the memory of the somewhat abrupt and sad realization (let's just say that in my early twenties that thinking ahead was not always my strong suit) at the very end of college that I just wouldn't get to this anymore. (Somewhere in a box I have the FCC license I had to get to be on-air and operate the station. I should look for that sometime)
KCPR has an "official site" here with streaming audio (I wonder if the recent Copyright Office decisions on compensation for streaming audio will force KCPR's online audio offiline?) - the station did not always have a web presence. I bought the domain burntdogradio back in the nineties and wanted to set up the .org for KCPR (KCPR's nickname is Burnt Dog Radio which I always assumed was because of the burnt plastic sculpture of the RCA dog in the studio) but between not knowing the staff at the time and just general not-getting-around-to-it it never happened. So it's nice to be able to catch up online.
I'm a little underwhelmed by the Wikipedia entry actually - if I find some time I may have to lend a hand to improve it (Still it's nice to know that KCPR is "notable"). Clearly it's lacking details on myself and the once famous show "New Wave Mania". :)
